Shelby Street Mural, An Original Framed Painting by Paul Baxendale
Shelby Street Mural, An Original Framed Painting by Paul Baxendale
I have long admired the large mural on the side of a building on the corner of Shelby Street and East Alameda in downtown Santa Fe; I don’t know when it was made or by whom, but it is comprised of a complex construction of stained and painted, dimensional wood beams and painted plaster. The interplay of light and shadow causes it to look different at different times of day.
I felt it would be a fun challenge to see if I could capture this unique piece of Santa Fe public art in a small painting, so I set to the task with an array of tiny brushes and my trusty tubes of gouache (an opaque watercolor-like paint). This is what I came up with! It is painted on smooth archival Arches watercolor paper. I had it professionally framed in a simple matte white frame; it is “shadowboxed” meaning that there is about 1/4” of space between the plexiglas face and the painting itself.
This charming painting, framed, measures 7.5” x 9”. The frame is 1 1/8” deep.
I am happy to ship this to you, or it may be picked up at my Santa Fe studio!
