Cut wood window grills such as the one depicted in this painting are often seen around Santa Fe over windows, or set into adobe walls or garden gates. Originally a security feature, they have become more decorative and represent the way that the local architecture incorporates pattern to convey a sense of play and delight. This painting captures that shadow and perspective of a real window grill; your guests are likely to marvel at the glimpse of brilliant blue sky outside of your “window”! My original photograph that this painting was made from comprises the front and back cover lining of Jane Smith’s iconic book Santa Fe Sense of Place.
