During the 1960’s, a former residence on Canyon Road was converted into a fun and stylish restaurant under the masterful hand of acclaimed designer Alexander Girard. His playful touches have been preserved to this day, and one of my favorite features is the inset plaster rainbow that spans an entire wall of the main dining room. I wanted to bring some of this magic into my own home, so I set out to create this panel that is inspired by the look of the original. This Rainbow is inset into layers of MDF that I have sculpted to mimic the look of the original and painted in bright mineral pigments. My colors are quite different from those in Girard’s original… this is my take on a classic!

Alas, I have only so much wall space here, and I am excited to send this off to a new home… perhaps someone who is a dedicated aficionado of Girard’s work (or my own?). Pairs perfectly with a sunny, mid-century modern interior, and also looks fab in a child’s bedroom!
